Healthy forest vs. healthy lungs: Calgary councillor asks for smoke mitigation
Fires burning in Alberta, B.C. and the USA are causing long-term air quality warnings at the City of Calgary.
Coun. Richard Pootmans stated Calgarians have suffered an unusual quantity of forest fire smoke and indicated there has been a change in forest-fire management that could be making things worse for taxpayers and their lung health and city kids with asthma suffer less if they live near a park.
“In the past, there has been controlled burns, today everyone acknowledges that forest fires really have to go through a natural cycle and it produces a healthy forest,” said Pootmans.
Community services general manager Kurt Hanson stated he enjoys big challenges but is not sure he is up to the fire problem, but provided some ways the city can help and has reacted.
“Among the things we may be able to perform, a few of those burns which are done are renewal burns they do not respond as fast, we could associate with the department of parks and environment,” Hanson said.
Hanson said the community opened up doors to bring kids’ activities indoors, the city’s tracked staff and altered work if necessary.

The town also introduced a fire ban to be certain that the city is not contributing any more smoke into the mix.
“We are also helping, we have deployed three vehicles two ladders and one engine to aid in Waterton,” Hanson said.

The disease produces symptoms — Difficulty breathing and coughing — so much like pneumonia that the disease many times is misdiagnosed, said Holly Browne, a director with the health unit’s environmental health department.
“It is a fairly rare illness,” Browne said. “We are seeing an increase today, and we are not certain why.”
The people reporting the infections have been in a place which has prime conditions — moist and moist woodlands — for the fungus to grow.

“Anywhere there is decaying wood, decaying leaves, which would make the soil more prone to developing fungus.”
“We are not 100 percent sure, but our understanding is it is a white fungus.

Browne said about 50 percent of individuals that are infected wind up showing symptoms. Of people who do show signs, it is usually as they’re already compromised healthwise or have limited ability to fight off infections.
As of yet, there’s absolutely no clear indication in which the people encountered the uterus.
“We do not have an specific source,” Browne said. “However, based on the fact that the individuals are all from the same community, we think they were exposed to a common source.”
